Removing the Mask - Mystical Insights into the Festival of Purim

"This Midrash discusses a unity between people - a "horizontal" form of unity, and between man and G-d - a "vertical" unity. It teaches that the vertical unity depends upon the horizontal unity."

"The right hand represents the Sefirah of Chessed, kindness. The raising of the right hand signifies raising Chessed up to the Sefirah directly above it in the right pillar, Chochmah, wisdom. Chochmah is both the source of and the perfection of Chessed. Wisdom naturally dictates acts of kindness and constructiveness, and true kindness only exists when it is guided by wisdom. Raising the right hand thus signifies attachment to Torah, which is associated with Chochmah."

"The name Mordechai consists of two words: meiro (myrrh), a type of incense, and dachia, meaning pure-combined, "pure incense." Offering incense to G-d is one of the ways in which negative energy is removed from upon the Jewish people. For instance, when a plague afflicted the Jews in the wilderness, Aaron, the high priest, offered pans of incense to G-d, bringing the plague to a halt. Mordechai thus represents the ability to counteract the first evil of Amalek, which channels impure energy into the world via witchcraft."
