Beauty, Art and Colour in Jewish Mysticism

"When we slow ourselves down, however, and surrender to the moment, we realise the awe-inspiring and riveting beauty of the world. Even a meagre tree exudes life, and the vast blue sky evokes humility in our spirits. The diversity of things astounds us, as does the complexity of each individual creature. We begin to relate to the words of Jacob, "Indeed, G-d was in this place, and I knew it not!"

"Observe any artwork and you will discover that it consists of two general aspects: a physical substance, such as wood, paint, or ink, and a spiritual design, such as a flower - shaped vase, or a cupboard. In Jewish mystical thinking the physical substance is referred to as the chomer, matter, and the spiritual design is the tzurah, form. The hallmark of artistic talent is the ability to fuse the two."

"In Jewish mystical thought colours are not merely wavelengths of light, but manifestations of spiritual forces. Each of the seven physical colours corresponds to one of the seven lower Sefiros, and to the seven basic human emotions. They parallel as follows: Chessed - blue, Gevurah - red, Tiferes - yellow, Netzach - purple, Hod - orange, Yesod - green, and Malchus - brown. This is not to say, of course, that the Sefiros possess colour, for they are utterly removed from physicality. Rather, they may be manifested in our physical world in the form of particular colours."
